Best Post-Penguin Anchor Text Optimization

If you are an internet marketer you always have to check your competition. This way you will have a better understanding of how google works, how and why some sites rank high and why some sites get penalized.

The truth is that since the Penguin update the anchor text diversity gained more importance. I took the time to analyze many websites in some big niches and I found some  similarities. Here are some screenshots:

This website ranking #1 for one of the most competitive keywords on the internet. As you can see the most used anchor text is the brand name.

This is another great website which I am analyzing  with no signs of penalty and with stable rankings for years already. Two of the top 3 keywords are brand names.

Yet another high quality site with very good rankings in google. As you can see they are also using the brand name as anchor text. I can go on with a list of the best ranking sites all using the brand name as anchor.

Examples for brand names are: mysite,, my site.

Random keywords are: click here, this site, John’s site, this page.

The main keyword is the “money making keyword” of the site. For example “payday loans”.

As a conclusion we can say, that having the brand name at least once in  your top3 most used anchor texts is really important. The big sites are doing it, so it must work and it looks really natural. Don’t forget to also use some random keywords. If a stranger finds your site and decides to share it with a friend will he say “check out these HD wallpapers 1600×1200”? No! He will say “check out this cool wallpaper site”.

Is fiverr good for link building?

A few months ago I started trying out different fiverr services and wrote an article called the Best Fiverr Seo gigs. Since then I have bought over 30 services there and decided to write yet another article about my opinions on fiverr and how good it is for link building.

Fiverr has one main advantage: it’s cheap, or is it? Today I left my second negative feedback to a service provider, because he promised 10k backlinks and after getting the report I wasn’t really impressed. The problem was that the service page didn’t have any clear details about what kind of backlinks these are. In fact I got some links from stats sites, which can be done for free if you have scrapebox. Most links didn’t work or were nofollow. My current fiverr account looks like this:

However you can also find a few gems on fiverr, but you will have to try out many weak services until you find a good one.

Conclusion: never use fiverr for your “money” site. I have use the fiverr services to try out different things on a few micro niche sites. Fiverr is full of low quality services and you should think twice before using any of them. The best way is to buy a service on your mini site and if you think it’s good enough buy it again for your money site.

Google Manual vs Algorithmic Penalty

With the appearance of the Google Panda update and now with the Penguin update a lot of webmasters got upset because of the many google penalties and the internet is now full with google penalty recovery articles. The problem is that most of them don’t give you enough information and/or are written by people who have never been penalized by google and are just rewriting other articles, giving false recommendations.

If you’ve been following this site, you may have noticed that I haven’t really updated it lately. The reason is that about 1-2 months ago the site was penalized by google and the visitors went down from 100 to 0 a day. Take a look at this video:

There are two types of penalties: manual and algorithmic penalty. I’ve had at least 5 sites penalized this year – that’s 1 site/mo 🙂 – so I “had the honor” to gain a lot of experience with google penalties.

How to know if you have a manual or algorithmic penalty?

If your site is not older then 6 months and you lose at least 70% of your visitors from one day to another, then you’ve probably got penalized by the Google algorithm. According to Matt Cutts these algorithmic penalties are temporary (most of the time), so your site may come back after a few months. This is what happened to this site: it was penalized and after 1-2 months it came back in the rankings.

Manual penalties usually happen to more established websites that rank on the first page of big keywords. The -50 penalty is also a manual penalty (all keywords that were on page 1 will be moved back to page 5).

What to do when you have a penalty?

Most people will tell you to continue building links and adding fresh content, but it all depends on whether you have a manual or algorithmic penalty.

If you have an algorithmic penalty:

  • don’t submit a reconsideration request, because you were penalized by a computer and not by a human
  • you can continue building links and adding fresh content, but it’s not necessary. After getting a penalty from google I haven’t even touched this blog and it has still got depenalized.

If you have a manual penalty:

  • try to find the problem, fix it and then ONLY THEN submit a reconsideration request. If you don’t fix the problem nothing will happen.
